Rabies Vaccination & Dog Licensing – What You Need to Know
At PAWS of Coronado, we’re committed to promoting responsible pet ownership and supporting the health and safety of our community’s animals. One of the most important steps you can take as a dog owner is ensuring your pet is vaccinated against rabies and properly licensed.
Rabies Vaccination Requirements
To license your dog, a valid rabies vaccination administered by a California-licensed veterinarian is required, along with a current rabies certificate. Rabies is a serious threat—particularly in areas like ours, where the risk of exposure from wildlife remains a concern. Vaccination helps protect both your pet and the community.
  • The initial rabies vaccination is valid for one year.
  • booster is required one year later.
  • Subsequent boosters are valid for three years.
Licensing Fees in the City of Coronado
Dog license fees vary depending on whether your dog is spayed/neutered (altered) or not, and the duration of the license. The options are for 1, 2, or 3 years. Altered dogs are eligible for lower rates:
Altered Dogs (Spayed or Neutered)
  • 1-year license: $20
  • 2-year license: $35
  • 3-year license: $47
Unaltered Dogs
  • 1-year license: $40
  • 2-year license: $69
  • 3-year license: $95
These fees are more than just a legal formality—they help fund the work we do at PAWS of Coronado, including caring for stray animals, providing medical treatment, and finding forever homes for pets in need.
Under California Health and Safety Code (121690), all dogs must be vaccinated for rabies and licensed:
  • Within 30 days of turning four months old
  • Within 30 days of being acquired
  • Within 30 days of moving into the jurisdiction
Licensing your dog isn’t just about following the law—it’s about being a responsible pet owner and helping to create a safer, healthier community for everyone.
