Hi! My name is Rico. I am looking for my forever family and would like to tell you a bit about me. I’m a 3 year old Chihuahua and I weigh 13 lbs. I’m a really smart guy and know loads of commands which I love to show off. I’m what they call an “orange” behaviorally which means I’m vivacious, vibrant, and cheerful! I love people! This is my personality the majority of the time but every now and then I need my space (some say I can be cat like in this way but I just don’t see the comparison!). So my forever family will need to learn to understand my moods and respect my need for a bit of down time every now and then.
I was transferred to PAWS from another shelter where I came in as a stray and when I first arrived I was very stressed and scared. I’ve had a lot of change in my 3 years and was likely treated abusively in my past. I’ve done my best to block that out but as a result I have some sensitivities when people handle me, particularly when putting on a harness. I also guard my yummy food sometimes. My friends at PAWS and my awesome trainer have helped build my confidence and trust in people. I love my training classes (and the treats!!) and am super proud that my trainer told me I’m an A+++ student. I’ve made tons of progress but will need a family that can understand and learn to recognize my behaviors (I give clear signals!) and be patient with my challenges.
I’m looking for a family that is dog savvy, patient and committed to continue to manage my behaviors as I’m still a work in progress. PAWS is including sessions with my trainer to help me settle into my new home. I would love to be the apple of your eye so an adult family without other pets would be the best situation for me. I will also need a yard so I can stretch my legs – it doesn’t have to be big – but it will make things easier if I can go out without having to be harnessed each time.
Thanks for listening and I look forward to meeting you!

PAWS Behavioral Assessment:
The PAWS Behavioral Team examines the personality of each dog as part of our overall assessment process when a dog enters the Coronado Animal Care Facility. Our personality color codes, along with any age recommendations we provide, are meant as a guideline to help adopters determine which pet will best fit into their household.
Each dog that is available for adoption will be classified with one of the following three personality color codes:
– Happy-go-lucky…carefree…engaging…and adaptive! This dog might be initially shy, but his/her charming personality comes out quickly after meeting you!
– Bashful…shy…introverted…timid…and coy! This dog may take a little time to warm up to new faces, but your patience will be richly rewarded once he/she is familiar with you!
