The Canine Mayoral Election is a PAWS-sponsored biennial event in Coronado. Every other spring, Coronado resident dogs have a chance to run for Mayor! Registration begins in February and the campaigns kick off in March. The participants, known as “Caninedidates,” campaign throughout Coronado to drum up votes. Voting takes place in April. Each vote costs one dollar and voters are encouraged to vote as much as they want! By May, we have a new Canine Mayor who serves the community for a two-year term.
The Canine Mayor participates in several local events, including a starring role in our Fourth of July and Christmas parades. All race participants become members of the canine council for two years and are also welcomed to various PAWS and Coronado events. All proceeds benefit PAWS and their efforts to improve animal welfare in Coronado. In our 2016 election, the Caninedates raised over $18,000 for PAWS!
Please say hello to current Canine Mayor Bailey, Vice Mayor Gracie and the members of the Canine Council when you see them around town representing our fair city!
